Following the filing of numerous formal complaints against him for his claimed remarks regarding the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has petitioned the Madras high court for transit anticipatory relief.

Renowned for his caustic humor and candid opinions, Kunal Kamra has been in legal hot water after being accused of making disparaging remarks. The comedian has sought legal protection from arrest while he gets ready to counter the charges after the FIRs were filed in Maharashtra.
Kunal Kamra asserts that the Madras High Court has jurisdiction because he is a permanent resident of Villupuram town in Tamil Nadu. On Friday, March 28, according to Live Law, the case was urgently mentioned before Justice Sunder Mohan.
Shiv Sena MLA Muraji Patel filed a Zero FIR against Kamra under Sections 353(1)(b), 353(2) [Public mischief], and 356(2) [Defamation] BNS. Later, the FIR was moved to Mumbai’s Khar police station.

Although Kamra’s parody song about a “gaddar” (traitor) did not name anyone, it infuriated members of Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena party, who looted the Mumbai performance venue Habitat studio and told the police that the leader had been defamed.
Citing death threats from party members, Kamra refused to appear before Mumbai police and asked for a week’s leave.
Though he added that Kamra‘s jokes were offensive, Shinde stated that he did not condone violence by his party members.
The Habitat studio in Khar, Mumbai, where Kamra had played, had to temporarily close its shutters after his supporters looted it over the weekend.
The studio’s signage was covered off, and roughly a dozen police officers surrounded it on Wednesday.

After inciting an uprising inside the party when it severed its connections with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Shinde was appointed chief minister of Maharashtra in 2022. In a subsequent administration, he assumed the deputy position.

A number of BJP lawmakers issued warnings about the misuse of free speech.

However, Kamra received praise both on social media and elsewhere; in only two days, a YouTube video of the performance received over 6 million views and more than 58,000 comments.

Kamra is a contentious comedian.
